ICYMI: Heydar Aliyev Centre included in @ArchDaily’s ‘Top 11 Projects in 11 years’. Published to celebrate ArchDaily’s 11 year anniversary, the list of the 11 most popular projects on their website in the past 11 years also includes projects by Le Corbusier, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Peter Zumthor, Louis Kahn and OMA.
Built on the site of a Soviet munitions factory, the Heydar Aliyev Centre’s architecture embodies an enlightened philosophical framework. Its fluid forms promise to open and engage Azeri culture with an act of attraction rather than imposition.
The centre’s exterior surfaces rise from its surroundings to define a series of exhibition and performance spaces within, inviting the urban fabric of the city into the heart of building.
Named ‘Design of the Year’ by London’s @DesignMuseum, the centre was cited as a masterwork of invention and execution,” and since opening, has hosted exhibitions and performances by Azeri and international artists. On his visit to Baku, Pope Francis addressed local residents and religious leaders in the centre’s theatre.

#TBT Jockey Club Innovation Tower at @HongKongPolyU opened five years ago this week to house the university's school of design.
Awarded the #RIBA Prize for International Excellence, the 15 storey, 15,000 sq.m Innovation Tower accommodates more than 1,800 students and staff in design studios, labs and workshops, exhibition areas, classrooms, lecture theatre and community lounges.
Located on a narrow, irregular site at the northern edge of the university bordered by the university’s football ground and a motorway, the tower is connected to the heart of the campus; encouraging the university’s faculties to develop multidisciplinary initiatives and engagement with the community, government, industry, NGO’s and academia.
The tower’s interior and exterior courtyards create informal spaces to meet and interact. Its design promotes communication between the school’s many learning clusters and design disciplines; establishing a collective research culture where many different contributors can learn from each other.

Morpheus Hotel @CityOfDreamsMacau named @ArchDaily’s Building of the Year’ in the hospitality / commercial category. In the 10th year of the award, more than 80,000 votes were cast by ArchDaily readers over the past two weeks.
・・・
Listed by @TIME Magazine as one of the ‘World’s Greatest Places’, Morpheus combines dramatic public spaces and generous guest rooms with innovative engineering and formal cohesion.
ZHA created the Morpheus as a vertical extrusion of site’s existing abandoned foundations; using this rectangular footprint to define a 40-storey building of two internal vertical circulation cores connected at podium and roof levels where the many guest amenities were required. Three horizontal vortices generate the voids through the atrium and define the hotel’s spectacular interior public spaces. In-between these voids, a series of bridges create unique spaces for the restaurants, bars and guest lounges.
Working with @BuroHappoldEngineering, ZHA designed the building’s structure to optimise the hotel’s interiors. The world’s first free-form high-rise exoskeleton, its rich pattern of structural members at lower levels progresses upwards to a less dense grid of lighter members at its summit.
Lawrence Ho, chairman and CEO of Melco Resorts explains, “From the very beginning, we shared ZHA’s vision. Morpheus offers a journey of the imagination. It pleases the eye and excites the senses: a contemporary masterpiece to be enjoyed by many generations to come.”

Great image of @RiversideMuseum and #tallship #Glenlee on the #RiverClyde #Glasgow - #reposted from @bismxrk.
・・・
For the eighth consecutive year, Riverside museum of transport has welcomed over a million visitors to its exhibitions and events. Named ‘European Museum of the Year’ 2013, Riverside has become one of #Scotland’s most popular cultural hubs and tourist attractions since opening in 2011.
The @NewYorkerMag explained at the Riverside’s opening: “The building is visually striking, and inside it yields a space that is both dramatic and functional—with the capaciousness of a warehouse but also a sense of movement… the building reveals itself to you as you move through it and experience its curves. The glass walls at either end bring in plenty of daylight, and through the one facing the river you can see a huge nineteenth-century sailing ship permanently anchored next to the museum. There is something sentimental at the heart of any museum whose reason for being is to celebrate the affection we feel for objects that were once part of everyday life, but the Riverside Museum has a boldness that transcends coy nostalgia. This is powerful architecture built to house powerful things. Its easy, flowing quality reminds you that the purpose of this museum is to give these streetcars and fire engines new life in a post-industrial world, in which they are honored rather than used. You begin to understand what #ZahaHadid was trying to do when you look across the river to the lone remaining shipyard, where amid the cranes and drydocks stands a huge metal shed with a zigzagging roof, used for framing hulls. She took the shed as a starting point, but any architect with a pair of eyes could have done that. What Hadid saw was that, in echoing the shed, it was possible to arrive at a perfect metaphor for the evolution of an old industrial city like Glasgow. The city has gone from being a place where people labor at making things to a place where people come to be entertained; Hadid has taken something hard, tough, and workaday and made it fluid and inviting.”

@520W28 in #NewYork is one of four #ZahaHadidArchitects projects to win this year’s World Architecture Community (@WACommunity) Awards. Now in their 30th cycle, the awards recognise remarkable projects that inspire contemporary architectural discourse. #ZahaHadid Architects’ four winning projects mark a record for the awards programme to a single design studio.
・・・
There is a powerful urban dynamic between the streets of #NewYork and the High Line, a layered civic realm that has developed over generations and in many iterations. 520 W 28th conveys this contextual relationship, applying new ideas and concepts to create the latest evolution of the site’s rich history.
The split levels of the design define varied living spaces and echo the multiple layers of civic space on 28th Street and the @HighLineNYC.
These split levels are expressed within the interlocking chevrons of 520 West 28th’s hand-crafted steel façade which carries the spirit of Chelsea’s industrial past; its detailed workmanship by @MCohenAndSons continues the venerable tradition within New York’s historic #architecture of enhancing the public realm.
Designed and constructed with a practiced understanding of material qualities and manufacturing techniques, the steel façade conveys the attention to detail evident throughout 520 West 28th—brushed and tinted by hand to resonate with the adjacent structures of the #HighLine and its #NYC neighbourhood.
Within an established community of over 350 art galleries that has seen the High Line’s transformation from abandoned freight rail line to public park, 520 West 28th embodies a commitment to uphold the distinctive character of its neighbourhood; creating a building with its own architectural presence, yet very much of its surroundings.

Brilliant photo of Generali Tower #Milan #reposted from @ahmed_._bedoui.
The Generali Tower is one of four #ZahaHadidArchitects projects to win this year’s World Architecture Community (@WACommunity) Awards. Now in their 30th cycle, the awards recognise remarkable projects that inspire contemporary architectural discourse. #ZahaHadid Architects’ four winning projects mark a record for the awards programme to a single design studio.
・・・
Generali Tower is within @CityLifeMilano, the largest new civic space and public park in #Milan since Parco Sempione opened 130 years ago.
Aligned at ground level with three of the city’s primary axes that converge within CityLife, the 170m Generali Tower connects with its surrounding public piazzas and park; the curvilinear geometries of its podium defined by the perceived centripetal forces generated from the staggered intersection of these three city axes.
This vortex of centripetal forces at ground level is transferred vertically through the tower by realigning successive rhomboid-shaped floor plates to twist the tower about its vertical axis. This helical twist reduces incrementally with the height of each floor above street level, giving all floors a fractionally different relationship to the floors above and below.
As the tower rises offering broader views across Milan, the twist orientates the tower's higher floors to the primary southeast axis leading to Bramante’s 15th Century tribune of Santa Maria della Grazie.
The tower houses up to 3,900 employees to meet Generali’s continued growth as one of the world’s largest financial institutions.
With a double façade system, Generali Tower’s high standards of energy efficiency have received LEED Platinum certification from the US Green Building Council.

Zaha Hadid Design at Design Shanghai, 6-9 March 2019.
@ZahaHadidDesign has collaborated with @RoyalThai_ and @Kohler to present the 'Skyrunner' installation at @Design_Shanghai 2019. Located within the colonnade of Shanghai Exhibition Center, the installation incorporates the RE/Form carpet collection by Zaha Hadid Design for Royal Thai.
Inspired by themes that feature prominently in #ZahaHadid’s work including pixelated landscapes, striated lines, ribbon-like projections and organic cellular form, the RE/Form collection captures Hadid’s signature use of interweaving, layering and the play of light and shadow.
The ‘Skyrunner’ installation incorporates a bespoke carpet that has been created to integrate the RE/Form collection’s original ‘Pixel’ design with an intricate overlay of the three collaborators’ logos.
Extending the length of the colonnade, the installation creates a pixelated landscape that weaves with the rhythm of the neoclassical columns and reaches skywards.

Final days to visit ‘Constructing Agency’: the exhibition at @ZahaHadidGallery of works in progress from the Architectural Association Design Research Lab (@AADRL). In method and practice, AADRL challenges the conventions of how we discuss, design, fabricate and live within architecture and urbanism today.
Championing the belief that design permeates all aspects of life, AADRL’s approach takes architecture as a framework to explore, invent and respond to the challenges of today. It is a process without finality, a pursuit of the adaptive and evolutionary means to allow our environments to participate and evolve with us.
This work examines the future of living and culture, proposing design research that explores the means to enable this experimentation. In the spirit of the sculptor Robert Morris, AADRL's architecture is a continuous work in progress altered daily.
