Rocco⁣⁣
⁣⁣
My wife Callie has large ears. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Honestly, I find them very attractive as I’m something of an ear aficionado but hold nothing against small-eared people or dogs. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Callie’s ear size enables her to hear very well. The downside is that she’s lost 27 of those fancy little Apple earpods as they don’t stand a chance in her canals on a day with even a moderate breeze. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
12-year-old Rocco is blessed with above-average ears, excellent hearing, and selective listening. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
He is discerning.  This quality is rare in a dog, and it’s taken years to develop. When he was wet behind the ears, he hailed from a puddle on a country road, a puddle you don’t want to be from in the dead of a winter, no matter how discerning a Cocker Spaniel you might want to be. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
These days Rocco, like Callie, plays it all by ear. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Have a great week and thanks again for following along. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
#CockerSpaniel #airpods #TheYearOfTheDogs sure is a long year; someone needs to tell him? All this to sell books? Is he even listening? #ears on #canyouhearmenow

Six-year-old Clarence is named after the guardian angel Clarence in the classic film ”It’s a Wonderful Life.” He’s sent from heaven to convince the film’s desperate protagonist George Bailey that life is worth living despite his financial troubles with old man Potter down at the bank. .⁣⁣

My wife Callie insists that we watch this movie every Christmas because we are always in financial trouble and both have a thing for Jimmy Stewart. .⁣⁣

Clarence, the dog pictured above, is a guardian angel of sorts as well, fending off occasional disagreements with bullies and inspiring others that life is indeed wonderful. .⁣⁣

Gerdie ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I had a sweet grandmother named Goldie, who lived with us when I was growing up. She made all of us watch The Lawrence Welk Show on Saturday nights. It was her big band version of Soul Train only with accordion players and denture cleaner commercials.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
14-year-old Gerdie, reminded me of Goldie because neither thought of themselves as being an old lady. For the record, though, my grandmother, God rest her soul, did not have as full a beard as Gerdie commands. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Gerdie's no spring chicken, but she's still a kid at heart and tries to stay fit by walking every day. She never drinks or smokes but has a thing for carrots. It's probably why her eyes are still good, but she's losing her hearing. She still has all of her teeth.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Originally from North Carolina, she was born into a very prominent family of Schnauzers, all Miniature ones, but they don't keep in touch anymore. A younger sister lives with them and looks like Gerdie but only from a distance. They get along. Let's just leave it at that.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Years ago, Gerdie got into a terrible mess with two dogs in New York City. The thugs nearly killed her. She loves the city, but it can be a dangerous place for a little dog from the South. She lost a chunk of her ear that day and has been optimistically cautious about things ever since.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Gerdie never married, it just wasn't in the cards for her. She walked down the aisle once, only to deliver a groom on time and serve as an officiant for the wedding. Now they are expecting a baby in the family, and she's busy preparing for that day.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Wunnerful, just wunnerful.⁣⁣
⁣
Sept 16 is the last day for pre-ordering #TheYearOfTheDogs after that you can just order it if they don’t run out ! #schnauzer #LawrenceWelk #NorthCarolina ⁣#seniordog Don’t let your babies grow up to be a #DogPhotographer #Adios, Au Revoir, Auf Wiedersehen, Good Night!

⁣
I’m named after a famous guy who was pretty good at throwing footballs to people. I’ve never met him so I don’t know if he can throw to dogs or not, but that would be so cool except that footballs are so hard to work with. You should never try to catch or eat something bigger than your head. ⁣

The only thing I would say about these pictures is, man, why so serious? Don’t get me wrong, I like their process (Vince and Callie), and they allowed me to express myself fully as an individual. Maybe I do tend to overthink things, but I’m also a lot of fun. You should see me in the water. I’m like a fish. ⁣
⁣
I guess I’ve always seen myself on the stage, maybe summer stock or community theater. I’m drawn to the more serious roles where I can show some range, and I’ve always felt a connection to Elizabethan times. I love Shakespeare for his enduring quality and relevance to current events. As an aside, I’m crazy about Keanu Reeves too. John Wick is my favorite.⁣
⁣
I don’t have a lot of time for social media. I’m trying to raise two great kids and be true to my art. It’s a lot for a dog.” ⁣

Graham⁣
⁣
I grew up with shouters. ⁣
⁣
Everyone shouted in our neighborhood. They shouted at their kids, dogs, the Pittsburgh Steelers, spouses, cars and electric bills. ⁣
⁣
My parents shouted as if my life depended on it. To get me to take out the trash, my mother would shout as if she had just fallen down a well and desperately needed medical attention. My father would open the screen door just enough to shout for me at dinner time as if the screen would somehow inhibit or muffle his range.⁣
⁣
Don't knock it. Shouting has worked for me in the pursuit of fine animal photography. I've shouted with great success to distract or get the attention of lions and tigers and bears. I once yelled at a cute little prairie dog but only because he was shouting at me.⁣
⁣
I have not found a dog that responds to shouting for picture taking purposes but I have barked, whined, cried, stomped my feet and talked like a baby in pursuit of a good photograph.⁣
⁣
Graham is deaf, which is a good thing for a dog that fears loud noises, but that didn't stop me from going through my routine. You don't get to be a 16-year-old Shih Tzu by sweating the small stuff. His reaction was concern, not for himself but for me as if I might be hurt or need the trash taken out. ⁣
⁣
Laidback Graham goes with the flow, and he doesn't give a Shih Tzu who's shouting at him.⁣
⁣
Have a great week.⁣

Caring for your Clients⁣
⁣
Here at the The Unleashed Studio, we are often asked how we provide such superior customer service with our potentially award-winning dog photography. Simply put, customers are the lifeblood of our business, and every day we show them that we care.⁣
⁣
1. Communication is essential. Callie and I greet all of our clients by name with a firm, personable and business-like paw shake. ⁣
⁣
2. We know having your picture made can be stressful; that’s why we offer a wide variety of posing services to every customer. We proudly maintain a 93% posing satisfaction rate as awarded by JD Power and Associates.⁣
⁣
3. Ask, don’t assume anything. We don’t encourage leg humping, but it does happen. While I usually look the other way, Callie handles these delicate customer touchpoint situations with humor and a winning attitude.⁣
⁣
4. Choose the right ball for the right dog. So many new dog photographers overlook this important detail. We could write a book about this. ⁣
⁣
5. Leadership. We always encourage family members to be a part of the process, especially when they think they can do better than us. ⁣
6. Finally, we provide a thorough follow-up survey and always ask for feedback ⁣when our clients wake up.⁣
⁣
You won’t find any of these helpful tips in my book, The Year of the Dogs, but it’s still a really great value. The link to pre-order is in my profile. ⁣

Dignan⁣
⁣
A dear friend of mine named Roland (you know who you are) kindly wrote to congratulate me on The Year of the Dogs book. He then wanted me to know that it is currently the Year of the Pig and what was I thinking with that title. I have since blocked his Instagram account.⁣
⁣
An old dog hears what they want to hear.⁣
⁣
Dignan is no exception. He’s nearly 11 years old and made out of Doberman, Rottweiler, German Shepherd, and Newfoundland. Stubborn and strong breeds that encourage selective hearing and eccentric behavior. Dignan fears nothing except his own farts, but I was not told whether it is the sound or the smell that he is afraid of.⁣
⁣
I don’t think Dignan liked me all that much. This happens from time to time, but he sure liked Callie, my faithful assistant and loyal wife who plied him with treats and compliments as his sizable ego needed to be fed as well. ⁣
⁣
A huge thank you to all who pre-order the book no matter what it’s called.⁣

The Year of the Dogs⁣
⁣
Yes, a book!⁣
⁣
In the 1970s the only magazine my father subscribed to was Readers Digest. The current issue was never allowed to be removed from our family bathroom so we could increase our knowledge and word power while doing our business. My favorite column was Laughter, the Best Medicine, as you may have guessed by now, and my writing certainly owes a debt to those stories.⁣
⁣
Toby the wired five-year-old wire fox terrier with one lung and a bum leg graces the front cover of the book. He’s a funny dog with a limited vocabulary who could wind up in your bathroom if you pre-order through the links in my Instagram bio.⁣
⁣
I haven’t seen a physical book yet, but I’m told it’s a real thing and includes photographs and stories from the past year. Thank you so much for your support of these dogs and this work. Callie and I are overwhelmed by the encouragement and incredibly proud to share this with you.⁣
⁣
I’m hopeful there’s enough interest to visit some of you. Honestly, we are working out how to do that but If you are interested in hosting us for a book signing event or presentation, send me an email or DM. Any help in getting the word out is really appreciated.⁣
⁣
I’ll be sharing more news about the book in the coming weeks, and please know that we are still photographing dogs and whatever else will tolerate us.⁣
⁣
Have a great weekend.⁣

Tilly⁣
⁣
My father was jealous of our family dog Chris. I was too.⁣
⁣
Chris could get away with things like a favorite child or visiting relative might. Incidents took place; food went missing, messes were made, odors were produced, and my mom would look the other way, dismissing all charges brought against the dog. If the shoe were on the other paw, my father and I would have been prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. ⁣
⁣
I’m not pointing the finger at Tilly, but I’m sure she would have gotten away with anything in our home. She’s a two-year-old merger of cunning Retrievers and good looks. No one would ever suspect her. ⁣
⁣
She’s innocent even if proven guilty.⁣

Levi⁣
⁣
I’m often asked if I have a favorite photograph. I don’t. My pictures are like children to me, and I love them all equally. I’m proud when one of the dogs reaches you in unexpected ways and is well liked, and I’m honestly sad when one doesn’t do as well. Not for me, but the dog. ⁣
⁣
Levi is a dog that is impossible not to like. He’s creative, independent, smartly attired and afraid of the Easter Bunny. I don’t mention this to embarrass him. Quite the opposite, as all self-respecting herders should fear any human dressed up as a giant animal character, fictional or otherwise. ⁣
⁣
I once ran from Scooby Doo at a Florida theme park. I can tolerate Shaggy, and I like Velma, but not a college kid in a six-foot-tall dog suit. I’ve never come across Daphne or Fred.⁣
⁣
Given a chance, Levi could dress up in a human costume and get away with it. ⁣
⁣
I doubt anyone would run away from him as he’s become very adept at analyzing and mimicking human behavior. In his first year, he can often be found eating string cheese and binge-watching Netflix from the couch, sitting upright with his feet out and his arm resting on the armrest. He does not channel surf much as his paws are too large for the remote.⁣
⁣
Have a great week.⁣

Chip⁣
⁣
Chip came from a cardboard box displayed in a Walmart parking lot deep in the heat and heart of Texas. DNA testing identifies his ancestry as Rhodesian Ridgeback, Border Collie, Cocker Spaniel and while not technically a price rollback, he was free.⁣
⁣
My wife Callie and I went to the grand opening of a new grocery store this week. This is what passes for a romantic date with us, and we held hands while strolling the many departments and aisles which they called experience zones. The store featured a wine bar, salad bar, burrito bar, sandwich bar, espresso bar, and even an olive bar. There were no free puppies in the parking lot.⁣
⁣
Chip is a serious dog. He speaks his mind freely and does not mince words. He’s a dog that looks before leaping and isn’t swayed by the aspirational offerings of a burrito bar or experience zone. He knows what he wants, and it’s anything with a funny name that can be thrown and caught like greenie, loopie, donut-y, pull-y, and ball-y. ⁣
⁣
He would never take Callie on a date to a grocery store.⁣

Most of your famous Beagles got their big break in the cartoon industry.⁣
⁣
Think Snoopy, Charlie Brown’s dog, a master of disguise and a WW1 flying ace who famously kissed Lucy van Pelt during rehearsal for that big Christmas pageant she was directing. Sure, it was unprofessional of him, but Lucy handled it poorly too when she made such a fuss “Ugh! I’ve been kissed by a dog! I have dog germs.” ⁣
⁣
The Rocky and Bullwinkle show featured a genius beagle named Mr. Peabody, who adopted a young boy named Sherman and invented a time machine for him. Their adventures were excellent way before Bill and Ted’s were.⁣
⁣
Underdog was a crime-fighting superhero who worked by day as a simple shoeshine dog. Like Superman, he changed into spandex and a cape back when telephone booths were easier to find. Sweet Polly Purebred was his Lois Lane.⁣
⁣
Maisie is a Beagle who in real life who has no real interest in the cartoon business but does have many of the same qualities presented by her animated progenitors. ⁣
⁣
She’s 9 and got to be that age through cunning, luck and a few well-placed kisses here and there. If she a had time machine, she might go back and change some things that happened to her, but she’s happy keeping her own Sweet Polly Purebred from harm.⁣
