As Spring went to sleep, Summer rolled awake to the smell of salt and sea baking under a warm sun. She dipped her hand into Ocean, feeling the light rays shimmer across her palm. Ocean welcomed Summer with open arms, a hug from a long lost friend. Her hibernation was long and dark - through the grogginess she felt new life. With excitement, Summer dove beneath the crystal blue surface, holding her breath for as long as she could. @nixon #nixonpartner

There was rumor of the Golden Lady - summoned by the rhythmic plucking of classical guitar and chorus of songbird, she would make brief appearances just before sun down. She could still be faintly visible sliding over the waves, only perceptible in the reflection of a full moon. A friend of the Golden Lady, known to the locals as Estrellita, was regarded for the joy she brought to fellow night sliders. She was known to calm the sea breeze - as she liked the way her reflection looked in the glassy waters of a high tide.

@oneillwomens Incredible 🙌🏽

I met Ian, owner of @seaquoia_wild_seaweeds, a couple days before this dive while I was perusing the Santa Cruz farmers market. I had initially recognized his business through a Podcast I frequent by @kyle_tman. When I initially approached Ian’s stand, he greeted me with an assortment of hand harvested wild seaweeds to sample. After Ian elaborated on their pharmacopoeia of medicinal properties and uses in the kitchen - I was hooked. Before I knew it we were both diving the frigid, yet captivatingly beautiful, kelp forests of the central coast.
With #worldoceansday coming up tomorrow, I can’t help but show my appreciation for the fishpeople I’ve met through the water. It’s truly a beautiful medium for connecting people and I can’t thank the ocean enough for all the friends and joy it’s given me! p.s. mahalo @santacruzwaves for letting be borrow the wetty, kept me nice and toasty out there 🤙

The trades swept heat waves over the beach. Amidst nature’s subtle wind chimes, palm fronds danced delicately in the breeze. There was a moment of silence as the water moved in cadence with the breathe of the ocean. A low tide revealed small crustaceans scurrying across the pools, moving rapidly before the water swept them out to sea. On the sea floor, sand performed pirouettes with the current - twirling with each passing wave. A subterranean tone could be heard reverberating through the deep blue. After closer inspection, the sounds were that of Humpack song. Mama whales singing their final goodbye before a long transpacific journey. @nixon #nixonpartner

@kimi_swimmy This series makes my heart so incredibly happy!! I love how it was never a shoot but just real fun times with real fun people and damn aren’t we lucky to live in Hawaii and be able to feed our souls with such beauty and bellies with such food?!!! You captured it all so brilliantly!!

@valentinethomas What an amazing montage of what seemed to be an amazing night 😍😍😍

It’s been over a month since I’ve arrived home - I’m sitting at my desk, drinking lukewarm coffee and day old pizza. I’ve found myself in between a state of eagerness and near painful nostalgia.

My travel partner Gabe, couldn’t have been closer to the truth when he confidently stated, “Mexico will take hold of you.” I didn’t know it at the time but that short stint south of the border would infatuate my mind for weeks to come. I don’t think I can pinpoint one particular person or event that aroused this insatiable wanderlust. It is a cumulative concoction of nature, food, music, dance and conversation. Whatever fuels this infatuation has a bloody, lime drenched, death grip on me.
I can still taste that morning coffee - overflowing with fresh squeezed coconut milk, leaving a fatty but pleasant residue on my tongue. There was always the distinct sound of horse hooves, galloping into the sunset, compressing the wet sand with every stride. I drift back to those long nights by a raging bonfire - the smell of Corona and woodsmoke wafting over a bioluminescent coastline. I can still feel my feet stumbling through an impromptu salsa lesson, a skill I’ve since vowed to improve.

As a resident of Hawaii, I thought I dialed in the art of relaxation. However, there is a certain pace (or lack of cell service) in Guerrero, MX that made me appreciate the slow times more than ever. This won’t be my last time time to this pantropical paradise - I’ve made it my mission to get back to the slow life, as quick as I can.

I have been very fortunate to capture the ocean and the people surrounding it. Every session in the water brings me closer to the present - a constant reminder of fear and awe. In an island community so incredibly connected with the ocean, I’ve had nothing but learning opportunities from time tested water men and women. In this same respect, I’ve found comfort partnering with brands that encompass this spirit of safety and play in the water. The creative and physical process of ocean photography is never guaranteed, but having a small level of knowledge before entering the water is incredibly important to me. Having the tides, light conditions and time accessible in the water has given me a heightened sense of awareness in the ocean. I’m happy to partner with @nixon to commemorate their Tide Watches - thank you for giving me the tools to succeed in the water. #nixonparter #nixon

@calsnape Love their watches! I need to build up my confidence in the ocean, if only ours wasn’t freezing cold here

The bittersweet symphony of climate change pushed the island diaspora to a greater goal: to bring its inhabitants who, before plastic pollution and rising sea levels, hardly gave each other a second glance. A calm before an inevitable storm - only acknowledged after the loss of nature’s, now less, bountiful beauty. @teresaatree. Us by @haring.music

Sea Foam danced onto the beach, reaching his tentacles across the sand like a seasoned jazz pianist. What initially sounded like rain sticks, revealed itself to be seashells audibly rolling under each passing wave. There were terrestrial figures who loved to frequent Ocean - they would take their wooden planks and yip and yap all day with Sea Foam. The Ocean enjoyed the Wooden Plank animal’s company and even learned a few words in their language. Most notably “Yew” and “Chee Hoo,” which Ocean would recite to herself every evening before bed. At the day’s end Ocean went to rest. She loved being a hostess and couldn’t wait to do it all over again.

Three miles off the coast of Barra de Potosí, white cliffs began to rise from the ocean’s horizon. Pantropical spotted dolphins made their approach as well - chasing a school of yellow fin tuna through an emerald oasis. Thousands of birds made their nests on the jagged cliff sides of the islands, their vocalizations echoing between the sea caves. The sea was alive - hundreds of mobula rays glided below the surface, a community of ocean neighborhoods moving beautifully in sync. @tinyatlasquarterly @lightroom
