Can we talk about protein for a sec?

Okay now onto protein! Protein is helpful for everything from helping to balance your blood sugar to even detoxification! BUT I still feel that we need to really focus on a plant-based (which doesn’t mean plant-exclusive) diet. So if you do eat animal protein, you don’t need bacon upon beef upon bacon upon well...more beef.
.
I always tell people, fill up on veggies and cook them and your meat in really great fat like butter or coconut oil. Have it with a side of avocado even! But your animal protein should be no more than the size of your fist.
.
If you’re vegetarian or vegan, it’s a bit more trickier because often times you need to food combine to get your protein (think beans + rice). This can make meals super starchy which will raise your insulin levels. So I suggest chia seeds, bee pollen, spirulina, nuts or hemp. Be VERY careful with soy (unless of course it’s fermented - which even then limit it to 2-3 servings per week). Soy milk and a lot of soy Frankenfoods are highly processed and not whole food at all! Not to mention, soy can be quite inflammatory (and remember weight is a form of inflammation!) because it’s a major allergen for a lot of people! If you do eat beans, then just make sure it’s not the star of your plate.
.
If you’re a vegetarian, consider eating whole proteins like eggs or even omega-3 fatty fish because you’ll also get those amazing EPA and DHA which are anti-inflammatory.
.
Either way, whether you are a meat eater or vegetarian try to get a variety in your food. It helps to build a healthy microbiome.
.

🤷‍️**SCARED CARBS WILL MAKE YOU FAT?**🤷‍️

My “low-carb” philosophy is grounded in my belief in fresh, whole, natural foods. In other words, a plant-based diet (which doesn’t mean plant-exclusive). I consume organic, grass-fed or wild animal products (eggs🥚, beef🥩, salmon) and I’m not at all opposed to carbs that are from vegetables and sometimes depending on my cycle or my workout, I’ll opt for something more carb-rich like sweet potatoes
.
The American diet is lacking in adequate vegetable intake and it’s crazy pants to avoid vegetables in the hopes of losing weight, as many low-carb dieters do. .
Fibre is QUEEN 🥦when it comes to health so I eat at LEAST 8-10 servings of veggies daily. Sound like a lot? Well when you factor a serving of broccoli is only ½ cup, it’s really not hard at all. Plus I like to make sure my plate is as colourful as possible and I’ll really only add about a fist-sized worth of protein (society WAY over consumes protein).

You can try to avoid it.

The fatigue, the bloating, the excess weight, the resentments…
.
You can avoid it and say it’s because of money.
But you know that deep down it’s about worth.
.
You can avoid everything, blame everyone and hate your body as much as you want, but you can’t escape it.
.
You can tell your body, the one thing that shows up for you daily, that it’s fat or ugly. 
But it still won’t give up on you...until it’s forced to.
.
You can keep avoiding the most valuable relationship you could have on the face of this earth and that’s with yourself.
.
You can use alcohol and food to distract you. But it won’t make it go away.
.
You can avoid it, or face it. 
You can listen.
And you can love.
.
It doesn’t even require consistency (in fact, it doesn’t even operate well with that because it needs ease and flow).
It just needs commitment.
.
And when you do, you’ll get uncomfortable. 
You may cry as you focus on your health (and not the weight).
You’ll drop pounds of physical weight and shed a layer of buried emotions.
..
.
I know this to be true because I’ve lived it (and still do).
.
And as someone who has been asked a lot, “Well how do I stay on track? It’s so hard!”
.
It comes down to this: .
I show up for myself - even if that means that showing up is resting on the couch, stretching or kicking ass on my matt. Whatever my body requires of me that day.
It requires continual practice of compassion.
The unwavering commitment to myself.
And it demands that I align my values with my mission.
.
Because when that happens, magic just follows.
.
This IS possible for you. You just need to believe with a glimmer a hope that it is.
.

What is your body trying to tell you?

As someone who has struggled with high levels of estrogen (think ovarian cysts, fibroids) and Hashimoto’s, a thyroid autoimmune condition, I learned my body was multifaceted. It was only ever operating based on what I’ve given it in the past lots of alcohol, drugs, cigarettes and poor food choices. It takes time to recover. I learned it was just trying to communicate with me for more love and more attention. Less destruction. I learned I needed to give back a little more rather than take and then call her names.
.
I learned that I didn’t respond in life the way I wanted (think thyroid and your ability to speak). I suppressed a lot and then eventually would blow. I also played a victim for a long time.
.
I learned that it wasn’t frustration or anger (think excess estrogen) that was present. I was actually sad, tired and spent. And that manifested into little patience especially with myself (of which I am my worst critic).
.
Can you relate? If so, again, I ask the question, what is your body telling you?
.
Yup. I’m going DEEP today. All month I’ve been talking about causative factors and giving you loads of science. But weight isn’t just about science. It’s about energy, mindset, past trauma and so much more. Every pound you shed is a weight we often use to protect ourselves.

I wanted to share this before and after cus the TRUTH is this: I was unhappy before and after.
.
I was obsessed with the scale.
I would worry if I didn’t exercise enough.
Or if I ate too much.
.
I felt like a prisoner in my body and with my food.
.
Guess what happened? I gained it all back. 
.
I gave up because I’m not consistent (I didn’t realize before that’s OKAY!) and it didn’t feel attainable.
.
I realize I shared this photo before but the difference now is this: When it comes to weight loss I realize it’s MORE than just the weight.
.
If u want to lose weight, focusing on ur weight is the LAST thing u should be doing cus you’ll drive yourself NUTS.
.
So where am I at now? .
On the rare occasions, I have weighed myself, I know I am 10lbs heavier (and happier)
I still fluctuate about 5-10lbs throughout the month.
I focus all my efforts on improving my digestion, mineral status, heavy metal load and lovin’ up those hormones.
I have the energy and have gotten strong.
I rest when I need it without the guilt.
I am no longer consistent but rather committed.️
.
I STOPPED hating on my body. It felt cruel when my body is the one of the few things that will always show up for me every day - and that’s saying a lot given how much abuse I’ve put it through over the course of my 40 years.
.
By hating on your body and calling it names, you remove a level of responsibility for a situation you helped to co-create. Why hate on something that is detoxing for u every second and working its ass off for u? The weight is a just a byproduct of inflammation and did u know that inflammation is a way the body tries to often protect u?
.
How can we ever hate anything that is trying to protect us? 🤷‍️
.
Every day I focus on asking my body, “How can I love and thank u for all you’ve done?”️
.

If you take Metformin, you may experience nausea, bloating, cramping and loose stool and it’s likely related to the medication’s effects on the organisms within the GI tract. Did you know that in recent years, it’s been discovered that fat isn’t just some useless, dormant tissue, simply used to store excess energy (calories)?🤯

Research has found that fat acts more like an organ in your hormonal system, constantly interacting and talking up a storm with other tissues by secreting hormones and other factors. Talk about a social butterfly!🦋
. 
Now not all fat is bad, we actually need a certain level of body fat for optimal health and also for hormonal regulation and our immunity.  Normal subcutaneous fat releases various hormones that even help to control our appetite and control our weight.
. 
Visceral fat, on the other hand, has been found to increase systemic inflammation and cause our immune system to go awol leading to a host of health issues.
.
Increased levels of visceral fat can also put pressure on our organs which compresses them, and could impair proper organ function.
.
Visceral fat has also been implicated in the development of insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome which can lead to the development of Type II diabetes.

Struggling with stubborn weight? You may have insulin resistance.
.
Here are the signs of it:
Excess thirst.
Frequent urination.
Weight gain.
Hormone imbalances (excess estrogen or testosterone)
PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) - although you CAN have insulin resistance and not have PCOS.
Elevated cholesterol.
High triglycerides.
Elevated HbA1c or glycated hemoglobin.
High blood pressure
Metabolic Syndrome
Fatigue or muscle weakness
Gestational diabetes
Acanthosis nigricans (darkened patches of skin on the neck, underarms, elbows, knees, knuckles)
.
Now I want you to ask yourself, do you fit any of the following:
lack of exercise/physical activity
poor diet of refined carbohydrates, or excess starch compared to green veggies.
being overweight
On steroids or antidepressants
vitamin and mineral deficiencies (this can be due to chronic stress or from a poor diet)
.
So what can you do?🤷‍️
.
⭐️For starters get MOVING.
I hope my workouts have been inspiring you. Please know that I could barely workout a year ago. It took a year of slow and steady work to get to where I am today. So it’s absolutely possible!
.
⭐️Set boundaries...but take accountability for yo’ damn self first.
If you’re a stress case, ask yourself, “how did I play a role in co-creating this?” Start there, then set a boundary thereafter. Remember, boundaries don’t build walls, they just create space.
.
⭐️Start making dietary changes.
This doesn’t have to be a radical shift either. But really focus on more veggies. If you don’t know how to cook, challenge yourself to get inspired. You simply can’t get to where you want to be by doing the same things you’ve always done!
.
⭐️Add in magnesium at 5x your body weight.
Magnesium supports the liver’s detoxification and your adrenals. Not to mention, magnesium deficiencies is one of the causative factors behind insulin resistance!
.

If u struggle with insulin-resistant PCOS, u may have been struggling with ur weight. One of the markers you’ll see on a blood test is low SHBG. This protein is designed to bind to testosterone and estrogen so we can get it the heck out of there! But in cases of PCOS that protein is low so you’ll have elevated levels of free testosterone.
.
But where does this all begin? 🤷‍️
.
A big part is in part due to high carbohydrate consumption. And when I say that I’m referring to starchy carbs. Even if you’ve gone gluten-free, if you’re replacing gluten with gluten-free grains and that starch is still predominant in your diet then you’ll see insulin levels surge. Over time, this leads to insulin resistance.
.
Another big factor is stress (mental, lack of sleep, etc.) can lead to elevated levels of insulin. When was the last time u craved a salad when u were stressed out?
.

Okay now onto some tips:

⭐️Get your sleep.
I strongly emphasize that women get off their devices by 8:30pm latest and actually be in bed by 10, 10:30pm LATEST and wear a night mask which makes a huge difference! Remember it takes time for the body to fall asleep.
.
⭐️Make 75-80% of your plate veggies.
I’m a huge advocate of a plant-based diet (that does not mean I’m a vegetarian either). Reducing the starchy carbs will make a huge difference.
.
⭐️Take bitters to love your liver.
Not Swedish Bitters because those have senna in it! Urban Moonshine Digestive bitters (original flavour) is a good one and u can take ½ tsp before each main meal. Liver work is crucial.
.
⭐️Stay hydrated and add sea salt!
Dehydration increases stress and cravings and technically you should be drinking HALF your bodyweight in ounces of water and add in ¼ tsp of sea salt to every litre u drink.
.

Sort of a strange question right?🧐

I ask EVERY woman I work with who wants to lose weight, “what would be the disadvantages if you did?” 🤷‍️The reason i ask this because according to Universal Yin Yang theory️, you can’t have a one-sided benefit. Thinking weight loss is the cat’s meow and answers to all your problem is setting you up for failure.
.
I’ve worked with thousands of women helping them make peace with their bodies and find joy with their food. Many have lost weight, some gained muscle. All of them were prepped to do the mindset work.🤓
.
Because on the flipside, the women who didn’t take this question seriously or who thought, “There are no disadvantages to losing weight!” ended up with a rude awakening.
.
One woman reported that she struggled with the attention she received once she lost the weight and as a past sexual assault survivor it made her incredibly uncomfortable. 
.
Another woman reported that her friends changed and she didn’t expect that to happen. Many of the friends she DID have now saw her as a rival.
.
And I had another woman share that she was hit with fear more than ever and found herself suddenly obsessing over every pound because she was terrified she would gain it all back.
.
Listen, I get my masterclass title has the term “weight loss” in it. And I’ve done that only because it draws the EXACT people who’s mindsets need to shift. The whole purpose of everything I’m putting out is to show you guys that weight is just a symptom and there’s SO MUCH MORE to it all then just the weight.

**BEFORE & AFTER PHOTOS: Motivational or dangerous?**🤷‍️
.
I asked this question today in my stories to see how YOU guys felt about it and it was pretty split. 57% of you found it motivational while 43% felt it was dangerous. Here’s my perspective as someone who HAS posted her own before and after photos:
.
I can 100% see how it can be dangerous. Women are BOMBARDED with images for how they “should” look and it creates an unhealthy obsession to get down to the “perfect number” (see my first post today re: numbers on the scale).
.
I also had a follower of my account (@thecarib) who jokingly said, “Depends on the day!” I laughed because I can totally see how that could be. One day I may find a before and after post highly motivating and the next day I may feel like I’m just not living up to my own high standards for myself.
.
So what is my answer on this debate? Is it motivating or dangerous? My answer is well...it can be both. I think it’s also important to see the context in which the post was written. I feel that if some people want to share their results with pride, then there’s nothing wrong with that. .
I also feel it’s important to see that both women (the before and after) were kick-ass women in their own way. One is not necessarily better than the other. Losing weight doesn’t make you a better woman. If you’re an asshole and lose weight, you’re still an asshole. Get my drift?
.
It’s why when I talk about weight loss during this month’s weight loss series, I’m ALSO saying it’s NOT about the weight. It’s about the causative factors behind WHY the weight is there. Focus on getting healthy rather than obsessed, or it’ll never be attainable. And even if you DO get to the weight that you want, will that AFTER photo of you of a happier woman?
.

**BEFORE & AFTER PHOTOS: Motivational or dangerous?**🤷‍️ . I asked this question today in my stories to see how YOU guys felt about it and it was pretty split. 57% of you found it motivational while 43% felt it was dangerous. Here’s my perspective as

Here was my BIG ah ha moment with that mindset shift on “health” rather than “weight.” The day after eating a dairy-filled bisque, I put on my bathing suit and was aghast when I looked so much bigger. I weighed myself and sure enough the numbers went up.
.
I called myself, fat, ugly and even disgusting. It wasn’t until Arik (my hubby) said, “you’re probably just inflamed from the dairy.” That’s when I realized, inflammation is the body’s way of trying to protect me, so how can I hate anything that’s trying to protect me?🤷‍️
.
Light bulb moment.
.
From that point on I focused on improving my health focused on what needed love: my gut, nourishing my minerals, detoxing my heavy metals and lovin’ up those hormones. ️
.
And it worked. 
.
Any time I saw a part of my body that I wasn’t thrilled by and possibly slammed, I’d remember to say:

THANK YOU FOR PROTECTING ME. ️
.
Reality was it was simply operating based on what I’ve given it all these years. All it’s been trying to do is support, detox and work FOR me every damn second of the day. Who am I to hate it? Talk about passing the buck, right?
.
After thinking of it in that context, I’d ask myself, “Okay, now how can I improve my health and love you today body to say thank you? Want more air? Want me to move more? Get more sleep? Eat more greens? How can I show how much I love you boo?”
.

It literally took my obsession (and I can get super obsessy) and diverted it to something constructive. Side note: when I say “focus on healthy” remember healthy also means that u can have a little leeway. Want chocolate? Sweet potatoes? Have em’! I teach women when is best. It’s all balance baby.️

**Body image + the scale + freedom at last.**

FULL CONFESSION: I used to weigh myself every day and that was actually less than 2yrs ago.
.
The 1st time that I lost a bunch of weight, I became OBSESSED with the numbers on my scale. I was paranoid if I ate too much, didn’t workout enough or God-forbid, eat a fucking sweet potato (oh the horror!). And u know what happened?
.
I eventually gained it all back. Being tied to my scale felt like a prison and the LAST thing I had was love for my body.
.
And side note: I think there is a HUGE misconception that body image issues only afflicts a certain subset of women, but let’s face it, it's something we’ve ALL grappled with at some point of our lives.
.
I also want to preface this and say, I’m not AGAINST the scale, but when your emotions go awol b’cus suddenly you’re 2lbs heavier, it’s not healthy. It’s not uncommon for our weight to fluctuate throughout the month (mine fluctuates between 5-7lbs). Not to mention just look at this photo of Kelsey Wells. It’s just living proof that a pound of muscle weighs the same as a pound of fat, but ten pounds of muscle looks a lot different than 10 pounds of fat. Since muscle is much more dense than fat, a pound of it takes up much less space than a pound of fat. So while you may look leaner, your weight may not have dropped that much.

So how did I break-free?
.
I forced myself to stop weighing myself. It was like giving up an addiction but I went cold turkey - which meant not weighing myself at all for two months. It was hard but eventually freeing as all hell.
.
Instead of the number, I focused in on becoming the healthiest, strongest and most flexible I could be (the flexible and strength is a continual work in progress).
.
I rested when I needed, I ate ma’ sweet potatoes before my period and LOVED it and stopped the obsessing.
.
.

Remember when I was telling you that weight issues ain’t nothin’ but a symptom? Frankly, if you’ve been trying to lose weight by focusing on the weight, it’ll never be sustainable.

Behind every weight issue there is some level of inflammation. The question is, “What causing it?”🤷‍️
.
One causative factor is if you’ve been on the birth control. Yes ma’ beauties, the birth control can absolutely promote inflammation. And if you want to get real science-y, just get your bloodwork done and look at your C-Reactive Protein marker (your inflammation marker). From a functional range perspective, you want this number to be < 1.5 mg/L.🤓
.
So what’s the alternative to birth control? My preference is the Family Planning Method which when used correctly is 98% effective and ladies, it’s actually empowering to KNOW your cycle. 
.

So how does the pill impact your thyroid?🤷‍️

Well for starters it depletes nutrients like B-vitamins and selenium that your thyroid needs to convert T4 (your inactive thyroid hormone) to T3 (your active thyroid hormone). Not to mention, women on the pill have been shown to have copper toxicity, of which can offset their zinc status (another thyroid nutrient!). .
The pill doesn’t just interfere with the conversion of thyroid hormones but it also interferes with your thyroid hormones at a cellular level. Literally every part right down to the utilization of those vital thyroid hormones.

It’s why I see women who get off the pill start gaining weight, feeling depressed and/or even losing hair. Why: because their thyroid is impacted!
