“Making selections is part of my profession. What do you preserve in an archive and what do you leave out? The moment we decide to acquire something for our archive, it suddenly transforms into heritage material and is subjected to all the laws related to this. You have to wear gloves when you pick it up, you are no longer allowed to touch it without a particular reason and the object has to be covered with glass if you present it. The material we decide not to select, on the other hand, will have an entirely different aura and atmosphere to it.”

“We recently acquired the archive of MVRDV. This architecture firm is still active. We mainly acquired their works from the 90s. This is a very diverse archive that does not only contain models. It’s partly ‘born digital’ in the sense that it contains digital drawings and 3D models, but it also contains their paper archive. This combination makes it a very multi-media oriented archive.”

“In MVRDV’s case, it would be interesting for us to collaborate more with architects or archive creators in the future. A lot of their material is already digital, so what we collect is in fact a copy of the original archive. Architects preserve and disclose their archives for different purposes than we do. We approach it from its cultural historical perspective, whereas an architecture office might look at an archive as (for instance) a database of design solutions. It would be very interesting for us to collaborate with these offices more in terms of the preservation and disclosure of their archives. We are also already working on this.”

You could call Bas van Beek (1974) an ‘antidesigner'. His work criticises market mechanisms, branding, empty conceptualism and the uncritical personality culture around designers. For the project Archiploitations, Van Beek uses found archive material as a basis for producing new work, sometimes realising historical designs that could not be executed with the techniques of the time, or translating an existing design into his own style. He will talk about this project in Archive Talks on 10 January, in the middle of the exhibition Speculative Design Archive. Johannes Schwartz.

#sonneveldsunday Gispen supplied no fewer than twenty-two different lamps for Sonneveld House, selected from the Giso lamp catalogue no. 29 (1929): lamps with elementary forms such as cones, cylinders and spheres. Besides these innovative Giso lamps, there was also a place for more traditional and decorative lamps with fabric shades in the house. This concession to tradition came from the family’s desire for luxury and comfort. Detail shot by @tycole

#sonneveldsunday A good example of the many hypermodern technical gadgets with which Sonneveld House was already fitted durings its construction is provided by the electrical wall clocks that could be found all over the house in conspicuous places. The clocks were plastered into the walls and directly connected to the mains, very unusual for this period. The clock face was probably designed by Brinkman and Van der Vlugt. It is a very simple design, which made it easy to read even at a distance. Picture by @sosilkae

#sonneveldsunday In the sitting room and library the orange-red armchairs form accents against a more neutral palette of brown, bronze and beige. In the bedrooms and dining room the situation is reversed: here the colour scheme by artist Bart van der Leck is used for the large expanses: red dining room cabinets, blue curtains and yellow for the floor. @mikaelfalke framed these colours in one picture.

Het Nieuwe Instituut and @serpentineuk launch an Open Call for an embedded researcher in the field of design, in collaboration with @formafantasma .

Through this initiative recently-graduated researchers and designers are invited to work together with Studio Formafantasma in the development of their upcoming investigation and exhibition at the Serpentine Galleries in London in Spring 2020.
The project will depart from some of the questions explored by Formafantasma in their 2018 e-waste related investigation Ore Streams and will culminate in an exhibition at Serpentine Galleries in London in 2020, and subsequent installments in other locations. The exhibition will critically monitor the relationship between design, production and the environment and develop possible design and other interventions including policy, based on multidisciplinary conversations.

The selected candidate will join Formafantasma’s team in Amsterdam, and work in close contact with Het Nieuwe Instituut and the Serpentine Galleries on a long-term project starting in January 2019 and extending for the subsequent 12 months. Find all the information about the position, the selection process and deadlines on our website.

#sonneveldsunday During and after the restoration of Sonneveld House in 2001, the condition of the interior when it was completed in 1933 was recreated as faithfully as possible. This was largely achieved with objects owned by the Sonneveld heirs, personal belongings acquired by the family when they lived in the house from 1933 to 1955, photographs and other historical material, and in some cases even replicas of original designs. @mhavicdejesus visited the house in 2013. Can you spot the differences?
