Surprise, I’ve got two major announcements to make! Number 1 is that I’m trading the African bush for the vast wilderness of ANTARCTICA! I’m literally on a place right now starting my long journey to Ushuaia where I’ll board my Aurora Expeditions ship for two glorious weeks offline! So if you don’t see me online, you know why! My second announcement is that my online photography course is currently on sale for New Years and I literally forgot to tell you all about it because I’ve been so busy since I got back from Africa. It’s $US49, like super super cheap! Take a look at the sales page through the link in my bio to learn more about it but if you want to learn photography from scratch, or improve your photography, it’s the highest rated course on Passion IO and something I am really, really proud of! Love you all and I’ll miss you a million, billion! Here’s my favourite shot from Botswana to prove my love. ️️️

BTW, Happy New Year all! I know that a lot of people are glad to see the tail end of 2018 and I guess I wanted to impart some advice on this post. Everyone knows that social media isn’t *quite* real life. It’s a highlight reel. And for many, this can leave to feelings of inadequacy and overwhelm. I get that, I really do. However, life IS an adventure and life IS fun and we do only have one chance at it. Stop comparing yourself to others. It’s not easy but it’s 100% possible and I am proof that it’s possible. (“Comparison is the thief of joy”.) Stop caring what others think of you, again I’m proof that this is possible. Run your own race and do what makes you happy. Remain entirely open, flexible and changeable. I question literally everything and late last year I stopped listening to, and reading, the News and began to minimize my time spent aimlessly scrolling apps and checking my phone. Practice mindfulness, it’s not some hippy dippy craze. I’ve started meditating and it’s literally life changing. But most of all, live! Don’t wait for tomorrow. Embrace every minute with loved ones, surround yourself with people that lift you up, read books, travel far and wide and don’t make excuses anymore. If your life isn’t how you imagined it to be then change it! Finally, live your life with integrity. Don’t cheat, manipulate, bitch, force your views on others and spread toxic energy. We’re all stuck on this planet together and it’s our ability to accept each other and get along that will ensure the long term success of humanity. PS. It’s an elephants ass.

This was one of the best wildlife experiences that I’ve ever had, and it all came down to the incredible team at &Beyond Nxabega in Botswana. Throughout all of my experience shooting in safari I’ve always wanted to see a leopard and I mentioned this to my guide and tracker when I arrived in the Delta. With their extended network of trackers, personal skills and profound knowledge of the area they set to work and on day 2 it happened! We watched this beautiful girl eat a baby warthog from top to tail before prowling around at sunset! I literally took 500 photos of her so I hope you won’t get sick of leopard photos? I’ve got a tonne or editing to do from Botswana but definitely more to share down the track. Thank you so much for having me &Beyond, you are truly an incredible brand that provides people with lifetime memories. ️️ @AndBeyondTravel @AndBeyondNxabega .

@thekangaroosanctuary Wow stunning! Might be one of my favourite pics of yours 😍

I’ve seriously tried to take a photo of a kingfisher around the world the whole time I’ve been into photography and never gotten close, they’re so skittish. However, in the Okavango Delta it’s so easy because there is wildlife EVERYWHERE! This is from the time we went out on the water, instead of for a game drive, and mum was totally frothing on being IN the delta! ️️ And the best part of our little trip out on the water? While I was distracted taking photos the boys (Candrew and TT) secretly set up a full bar on the boat and busted out some amazing vegetarian canapés! I hope everyone is having a wonderful day? @AndBeyondTravel @AndBeyondNxabega .

Possibly one of my favourite photos I’ve taken in 2018 for the sheer emotion it stirs in me. This is Candrew, and he was our tracker in Botswana where mum and I stayed for three nights at the incredible &Beyond Nxabega Camp. Why trackers? In the Okavango Delta there are year-round water sources, so guides can’t rely on finding animals at dedicated water holes. Each game drive therefore goes out with both a guide and a tracker and it’s the trackers job to literally track the animals from the front of the vehicle. I can honestly say this was the best game driving I’ve ever experienced and I attribute a lot of that to the passion of Candrew and our driver TT. &Beyond just might be my new favourite luxury travel brand! We saw leopard, lions and their cubs, wild dogs, baby hyenas and everything in between. I can’t wait to share more and ... HAPPY NEW YEAR! ️️ @AndBeyondTravel @AndBeyondNxabega .

Another reason why it’s a good idea to go into Etosha National Park with a guide ... they know how to push the boundaries on the park closing times! Being here in December has been great for a couple of reasons; it’s the off peak season so it’s not crowded and there are long summer days. However, it sucks that the park closes before sunset and you can’t shoot much golden light. ‍️ In saying that, because Mokuti Lodge is only a few hundred meters from the park gates, and our guide knows his limits and timings, we managed to catch some gorgeous light at one of the main water holes as two families of elephants bathed. This is my last shot of Namibia for now, next stop Botswana. ️ @MokutiEtoshaLodge @PrestigeSafaris

Okay, so I was 100% planning to post a shot of a lioness and her cub in Etosha National Park but then changed my mind at the last minute to post this! I don’t know what it is about giraffes at the moment but I love them! Don’t worry, I’ll share everything eventually. So, as I mentioned in my last post, I stayed at Mokuti Etosha Lodge for my three nights at Etosha and the best thing is that the property is literally right on top of the eastern gates to the park. Our guide Phillimon liaised with the park, nearby lodges and guide friends on safari to find us the best moments. Right now we are at the very start of the wet season but the rains are late so most animals gravitate to the year-round water holes, meaning it’s pretty easy to find action in the park! ️ @MokutiEtoshaLodge @PrestigeSafaris

@thekangaroosanctuary So beautiful. She looks a little like my funny faced camel Jasmine 😍

Introducing Etosha National Park Namibia! After departing the desert mum and I made our way north, all the way to Etosha. (I’m literally about to start working on an instagram story re: logistics ‍️.) We stayed at Mokuti Etosha Lodge, which is located right on the eastern side of the park. And when I say right on, I mean it’s literally 200 m from the National Park gate. You can self drive in the park but we opted to go on game drives with the lodge and it’s so cheap! For a morning or afternoon drive of approximately 4 hours it works out to be around $AUD75. The added bonus is that the safari guides all have their networks and contacts within the park so they know exactly where to go to get the best animal encounters. And on that note the first shot I’m sharing is actually of giraffes, haha. There’s so many in the park, you literally can’t drive a few kilometers without coming across them. But hey, I liked this photo so I’m sharing it. 🤔🦒🦒🦒 @MokutiEtoshaLodge @PrestigeSafaris

Possibly the most famous sand dune in the world, dune 45. Its name comes from the fact that it is at the 45th kilometre of the road that connects the Sesriem gate and Sossusvlei. Luckily for me, I accessed the park from Kulala Desert Lodge’s own access gate so we didn’t have to drive 45km. ‍️ If you zoom in you will see that the tree looks out of focus, it’s not! This is the effect of the heat on the desert. Through the viewfinder of my camera everything was wavy, it’s like nothing I’ve ever seen before! I captured this shot literally from the safari vehicle, I didn’t even get out of the car. Honestly, the possibilities are endless for shooting here. I’ll have more posts from the Namib Desert soon but for now I want to say a big thank you to Kulala Desert Lodge for hosting mummy and I on our dream African holiday. ️ @WeAreWilderness #KulalaDesertLodge

@samhorine Whoa! Cray

And here she is, Deadvlei. This is one of the sites that mum and I came to Namibia to see and it was a beautiful experience. Since we were staying at an all-inclusive lodge (Kulala Desert Lodge) we were out with a local guide every day. You can do it without a guide but it’s a bit trickier. Firstly, there are only two places to sleep within the National Park itself. One is camping and one is a government run lodge. If you’re staying in one of those you can technically access the site at any hour of the day or night. If you’re staying anywhere else you are at the mercy of the park opening hours but Kulala Desert Lodge has its own access gate that is the closest access to Deadvlei and Sossusvlei. Once you’re in the park you follow the road the whole way to the end until you hit sand. From here it’s a 4km drive in sand plus a 1km walk over the dunes to get to Deadvlei. If you’re self driving it’s easy to get bogged in the soft sand so we didn’t attempt it but our guide Castro let me drive the Landcruiser out one day! There is also a shuttle that runs from the car park over that 4km stretch but it doesn’t operate for the best light. Feel free to save this post if you’re thinking of going to Namibia one day! ️ @WeAreWilderness #KulalaDesertLodge

@thekangaroosanctuary Oh wow! Gorgeous!

If you’ve been watching my stories this week you’ll know that I’m on holidays with my mum in Southern Africa, and our first stop was the Namib Desert in Namibia. Every year mum and I travel together to a destination of her choice and I was super surprised last year when she picked Namibia. (Especially when previous years have included New York City, Paris and Barcelona! ) We’ve been staying at the incredible Kulala Desert Lodge, a Wilderness Safaris Lodge, which sits on a massive 37,000 hectare tract of private land adjoining the Namib Naukluft National Park. The property has its own access gate and it’s the closest access to Sossusvlei and Deadvlei, places I’ll share photos of next ... I planned out the entire itinerary for our adventure and we’ve also self driven so please feel free to ask any and all questions about the destination. ️️ @WeAreWilderness #KulalaDesertLodge

Everybody was Kung Fu fighting 🥋 I have another photography tip, and this is the last one before I start sharing some shots from Africa! (I’ve been holidaying, not editing you guys ‍️) This is a quick and easy one on using a fast shutter speed to freeze movement, and another photo shot at Sirromet Winery at the instameet I ran recently. Fast shutter speed is amazing because it enables you to freeze movement on any sort of action. This might be your dogs at the beach, any sport you’re watching, car racing or even your kids running around the backyard. Whatever it is, if it’s moving and you want a sharp shot, then you need the right shutter speed. I shot this at ISO 200, f2.8 and 1/1250 of a second. Generally speaking 1/1000 is fast enough to freeze any action from humans. I had my incredible models up on the hill and I instructed Jacqui to kick and Karl to fling himself back as if he had been kicked. This is a classic Instagram type “banger” from way back when, before the pods and the bots and the bs. Instagram can, and should, still be a fun and motivating place to share your work, your tips, your stories and yourself. And don’t forget, you can learn photography from me, link in bio @laurenepbath #LaurensPhotographyTips
