“Every artist was first an amateur”. Ralph Waldo Emerson. This week I’ve been reflecting on what it means to be a photographer, it’s a topic that’s come up a lot since I launched my online course. (Link in bio > @laurenepbath ) I think that most photographers, and most members of the general public, have a consensus that to be a photographer you have to have a natural talent. You have to be an artist. Well, if I showed you my high school art assignments you would definitely believe it when I tell you that I am NOT an artist. ‍️ I believe that anyone can be a good photographer if they master their camera and shoot regularly. (Well, regularly to start with anyway, then it’s like riding a bike.) Let the settings become second nature so that you have the mental capacity to explore the artistic side. I think that’s why photography interests me so much, because it is multi faceted. ‍️️

What are we all so afraid of? I ask myself this often as I reflect on my mindset when I quit my job nearly 6 years ago to pursue a photography career. I was at the stage where my fear of regret outweighed my fear of change and that was a powerful point to get to. When I look at the incredible work of the photographers I follow on Instagram it’s easy to compare myself and to become disillusioned with my work. I’ve always known that the photography itself is not my main strength. So I have a choice! I can let myself drown in self doubt and give up something that I love or I can stop the insistent comparisons and do what I love because I love it. Practice and shoot for myself and to reach personal goals, not to try and be someone that I’m not. There will ALWAYS be someone out there that is better than you but you can’t let that fact dictate your life. If you want to improve your own photography there’s two main things that you can do ... 1) learn your settings inside and out and 2) practice, practice, practice. If you’re still not at point 1 > check the link in my bio. ️ .

Do I consider myself an artist? I’m often asked if I was good at art at school or if I’ve always been creative and to be honest the answer is no. It might surprise some of you that I was actually a maths/ science student and very academic during my school years. 🤓‍ Even now I believe that my strongest asset as a “photographer” is my business acumen. (Not my photography! ) So it’s been funny to talk to people about my online photography course and to try and convince them that you can be great, even if you don’t have that natural talent and flair for it. I strongly believe that the fundamental skill that will make you a better photographer is the technical skill to work your camera. From there it’s just practice and developing your style. And yes, you CAN learn the technical side. It’s not that hard when it’s laid out by a logical brain... my logical brain! Check it out if you haven’t already > link in bio > @laurenepbath 🤯

Who’s busy these days? I recently watched a keynote where the speaker talked about how being busy is almost a status symbol. When you meet your friends and they ask how you’ve been the cool answer seems to be “sooooo busy!” I personally think that I’m busier than most but something that I always do in my life is make time for the things I love. Believe it or not my three main passions are the same as they always were; photography, social media and travel. One of the biggest objections that I hear from people about learning photography is “I’ve got no time”. And I hear you! But if it’s something that you really want to do then you should make the time. There’s nothing more important than doing the things you love. And, if you do my online photography course, you’ll get lifetime access to 16 progressive modules that teach you all the basics quickly. (And a closed FB group to ask me questions in) You can check it out via the link in my bio! < @laurenepbath > This shot was taken in Patagonia on a non work related trip. I simply went on a photography workshop because I wanted to and took the time to learn and practice and see a new part of the world. .

I’ve finally got a chance to start sharing some of the many shots I’ve taken this year and haven’t gotten around to posting. (And also to start promoting the second launch of my online photography course > link in bio > @laurenepbath ) This was a pretty popular spot this year in Argentina as the fall colors kicked in, I loved our afternoon spent here. It always surprises me how unimportant my settings are these days, I barely have to think about them I just know what I need. When I got my first camera I literally had to stop and think so hard about settings and always seemed to stuff them up and miss opportunities. That’s a big part of the reason why I wanted to write this course to begin with, to help people fill in the blanks with their own knowledge and get to the point that settings are just second nature. And, speaking of settings, this shot was taken at ISO 200, f11 and 1/ 15 seconds handheld on the Olympus E-M1 Mark II. ️ .

Good morning! Yep, it’s another “packing” flat lay, just a few bits and pieces that are coming to Vanuatu with me! AND, I am super excited to let you know that the new Western Digital Wireless SSD is officially on sale in Australia. Some of you might remember that I’m working with WD to help promote the new device and I was also in Sydney for the media launch. It’s an absolutely brilliant little drive with all the tech and stats to make you geek out. Even though I’m super non techy I still love that it’s such a streamlined device to use. Pop your SD card into the slot, copy the files, connect wirelessly to your phone and edit RAW files or stream 4K video or sort files into folders etc. Heaps of people have told me they’ve been waiting for tech like this for years! Anyway, I’ve been asked to tell you that you can buy it now at the major electrical retailers like JB and Ted’s and it’s also on sale on the Aussie Amazon site. Feel free to ask me any questions below. @wdcreators #WesternDigital #MyPassportWirelessSSD #Sponsored .

Good morning! I couldn’t finish posting my Karratha shots without finishing on this. To many Karratha is known for its mining industry but there’s so much more to discover. This shot was taken within a few kilometers of the airport and I think it beautifully shows the juxtaposition between the natural world and our man made world. I know which one I prefer but I’m also practical with how the world works. Shoot a little further past this spot and you’ll find the 42 Islands and 150 beaches that make up the stunning Dampier Archipelago. Tourism is still emerging out here so it’s almost like this secret place that not many people know about and it really is something special. Coming from someone that’s seen a lot of special. Thanks for having me! @australiasnorthwest #epicpilbara

Good afternoon! Just thought I’d pop some Pilbara pinks up for you. I only caught the one sunrise in Karratha and it was at Town Beach, named because ... it’s in town. Hopefully you guys caught my last few stories about my adventures with Clinton “on country” and my adventures with Brad of “Discovery Cruising”? It’s been an absolute blast actually! Good morning! Believe it or not this is Karratha! After leaving Broome we traveled over 800km to arrive in Karratha for me to teach at the Pilbara Business Bootcamp. (I did an Instagram Masterclass.) Since I was there already, a few days were scheduled for shooting and I took full advantage of them. This part of the Pilbara is way less represented than Karijini but seriously epic. Known more for its industry (mining) than its incredible landscapes, Karratha is still one of Australia’s best kept secrets. (Omg, the locals are going to kill me for saying this! ) I went out with Heli Spirit to photograph the Dampier Archipelago and had a brain explosion. How can any place be so beautiful? 🤯 @australiasnorthwest #epicpilbara

The last time that I was in Broome I captured some photos of the Cable Beach sunset camel train that ended up going semi viral around the world. I had near perfect conditions for shooting; a low tide right on sunset, great cloud action and calm seas. That’s the thing about photography though, you can be doing everything right but if the conditions aren’t there you’ll end up with an entirely different shot. This time around I challenged myself to get a great photo on a high tide, with churned up sand and a cloudless sunset and here’s the result. Throughout my entire Instagram journey I’ve always been honest with my images. They’re all single frame shots with very little processing. I want you to see what I see! And this is Broome my friends, on a day with less than perfect shooting conditions but looking perfect none the less. ️ @australiasnorthwest #amazingkimberley .

There’s something so magical and otherworldly about Broome, something that you can’t put your finger on. For many it’s a bucket list destination and people whisper “one day I’ll get to Broome, one day I’ll explore the Kimberley”. Two years ago I bought my stepdad here and the day he got home he quit smoking (after 50+ years) A year later he survived a coronary valve replacement surgery that might have killed him had he still been smoking. I still wear a symbol of the Kimberley on my wrist from my first visit and I never tire of seeing boab trees standing tall in this place. Don’t wait. The Kimberley is a place that will get under your skin and a place that you’ll never forget. @australiasnorthwest #amazingkimberley .

I would say that one of my favorite things about traveling to Western Australia is watching the sunset over the beach, it’s such a novelty for an “east coast” girl. ‍️ In Broome it seems like every man and his dog comes down to Cable Beach to enjoy this time of the day and I love that! Why don’t more people stop to smell the roses? After the last of the camel trains had gone past I decided to enjoy the ambience myself and this is just a quickie hand held shot because I couldn’t resist.
