Do you like modern architecture? • I can never really get enough of The Getty Center. It’s like the MET was in New York for me, an endlessly fascinating source of inspiration that I look at a bit differently every time I visit. LEED-certified and designed by Pritzker Prize winning architect Richard Meier - it is like a beacon on a hill at the edge of the Santa Monica Mountains. Just one of the many legacies left behind by eccentric J. Paul Getty, the millionaire oil tycoon and philanthropist. From the road it looks almost small at times, with half of most of the buildings that make up the site hidden underground, in order to comply with height restrictions; but when you start to read about how it was constructed or you see aerial photos - it’s clear how big it is. 16,000 tons of travertine stone from Italy cover some of my favorite parts of the complex. The panels are fascinating because, having been split along the natural grain, they reveal fossilized leaves, feathers and branches. It’s all so modern and yet so grounded once you take the time to look closely. Certain vignettes from Getty Center are cliché and have been shared millions of times. I’ve included a few of them in a blog post that will publish this weekend if you’re curious to learn more. But I liked the organic-meets-modern vibe of this trellis near the cafes. It appeals to my love of leading lines and the play of light and shadow. It is, as my friend from back east @jaybwilsonphotonyc says... #alanament

@charissa_fay I really loved this place. It reminds me of the Whitney in that it is a highly interesting and beautiful piece of architecture that you could photograph over and over and have different images every time.

Since I wanted to do a mix of cliché and less expected things during this most recent trip to Paris with my mum via a job for @airfrance - I was so thrilled when @parisjetaime offered us two Paris PassLib booklets to use for the duration of our trip. It includes access to le Metro, soooo many museums, plus a bus tour and a boat ride on the Seine. It was that pass which enabled us to make an unplanned stop @madparis late one afternoon as we were walking down Rue de Rivoli. Because we didn’t need to take the time to buy tickets or wait in line, we were all set to just stroll right in basically and enjoy the exhibits without delay. We wandered down darkened hallways punctuated with glittering jewels, black and white photos and punk art motifs enthralled with the strange yet beguiling mix of decorative art history. Yet it was this view from an upper balcony that caused me to pause the longest. I can’t deny that old or new, I have a love affair with architectural vignettes. Particularly those featuring leading lines. It’s that distraction which I’ve given over to a lot more lately in an effort to have a tiny bit more of a “theme” to my feed. After years and years of making my primary living from photography, it struck me this year that I still don’t have a signature of any kind. In fact, I have many. This type of moment is one and if you don’t mind, I think I’ll continue to seek them out to share with you. Merci #parisjetaime pour la PassLib. ️ We loved having it and would highly recommend purchasing it for your next trip to Paris. #hostedtravel #madparis #alanament #archilovers #leadinglines #shotoniphonex

@madamesiamparis Love to visit museums

@abricotparis Je serai comblé de vous rendre service 🍑

I was instantly transported back to the wonderful sensory overload that was Rajasthan last month when I walked into @saintjamesparis and discovered this central atrium. Similarly to the blue & white interiors that I posted about in India, this black/white/red design was so graphic that it inspired instant love. Had the streets of Paris not been calling me, were this hotel almost anywhere else, I would have wanted to stay here for a long time capturing all the angles and opportunities this space might gift the camera. The work of Bambi Sloan, the eccentric yet elegant interior design is classicism, elegance and downright daring all in one. Yet the interior design was not the only thing I loved about our stay at this @relaischateaux property. Our room with its cozy textures and beautiful art, the food presented by Chef Jean-Luc Rocha and his team which was a delight, mum & I were over the moon for the cocktails made by @dedelweedys in the library bar (she has studied the cocktail arts around the world!) and I adored the garden with its hot air balloon-inspired tents that echoed the wallpaper inside. A nightcap of Taittinger champagne accompanied by the most stunning etched glasses was the icing on the cake. The only thing I didn’t personally get to test was the Geurlain Spa. Le sigh. Perhaps next time #saintjamesparis #relaischateaux #hostedstay #boutiquehotels #bambisloan #hoteldesign

@marcwoodford Sweet photo man. How many places have you checked off the to-do list so far? 🙌🏻🏕

@kirstenalana @marcwoodford Oh a thousand and I still have thousands more. I don't think I will ever be done traveling truly.

From the minute we walked through these doors at @umaidbhawanpalace, I knew I was going to like our third and final @tajhotels property from our #tajness mini tour of India. I hadn’t done a lot of research prior to our arrival because I wanted to be surprised but I had heard that it’s been chosen numerous times in the past and even as recent as last year as the ‘Best Hotel in the World.’ Still I think @cntraveler said it best with their review. I can’t disagree with a word, “Even the most jaded jaws drop on arrival at Taj Umaid Bhawan Palace, the imposing royal residence turned luxury hotel in the northern Indian city of Jodhpur. Ironically, a 1920 famine across Rajasthan motivated then Maharaja Umaid Singhji to build his Art Deco aid project, creating work for three thousand people, among them descendants of the Taj Mahal carvers who chiseled the exquisite yellow sandstone façade here. Today, the royal family lives in one wing while guests pretend to the throne along endless marble corridors and in the expansive gardens clipped to perfection by a staff of 25. Take a worthwhile detour to the on-site museum, filled with photos and memorabilia cataloguing the bejeweled lives of Jodhpur’s elite. Since 1972 the palace has operated as a heritage hotel but only with the arrival of the Taj Group in 2005 does service come close to matching the awesome setting. All 64 sizable rooms are equipped with WiFi and round the clock butler service.” It’s that level of service that distinguishes this tour of Taj properties from any other hotel-focused trip I’ve ever done and I was pleased to find it was a thread that ran through the fabric of all three stays. I also loved that the heritage of this property includes having given work to people who were so in need of it at the time. Because while the idea of a palace can seem very outdated in today’s world, anything that does some good while also adding beauty to the world, ends up being good in my book. Umaid Bhawan is also still a residence of the royal family of Jodhpur who I hear still do a lot of good in the city or for the city’s residents. ️ #treasuredbytajtraveler #sponsoredtrip #umaidbhawanpalace

A few posts back I talked about our visit to City Palace in Jaipur with @coxandkingsusa. It has been the home of the royal family of Jaipur since 1732 and while they still live in the palace now, they don’t occupy all the rooms. Nor do they function as rulers in the same sense they once did but they do maintain the palace, not the government. It’s a fascinating fusion of Rajput & Mughal architecture. During our tour, which included access to the special rooms not available on the standard ticket, we visited the tower containing this room and it was one level up that I took the photo overlooking the city. Such a great view! Yet it was hard to not keep coming back to this room since every time I did I noticed something new. The scale and detail are incredible. I had to get @ananewyork to pose for me so you could see how low the ceiling is and yet it doesn’t feel claustrophobic. Somehow it feels like you’re inside a blue cloud filled with light and bursting with story. What was this room? Why are there four anchored rings in the ceiling? Why is it so low?! One story I read online suggests that the room was used to enjoy the monsoon rains. It’s called either Chhavi Nivas or Sukh Niwas (I read competing stories online). Just above it, a room called Shobha Nivas, looks like someone’s Chopard necklace was taken apart to be made into wallpaper x 100,000,000 — almost dripping with gilded gold and glass work that mimics gemstones. There’s also Rang Mandir which is covered in tiny mirrors, each outlined in gold gilt as well. All of it gives the impression that the Maharajas of old had a wealth which defies modern understanding. Not even at Versailles or other palaces in Europe have I seen the things I’ve seen in India! And in short, these extra rooms are worth the extra price of admission!! Thank you #coxandkingsusa #IncredibleIndia #citypalacejaipur #sponsoredtrip #jaipurrajasthan

Thank you all for the amazing reaction to yesterday’s post. If you like blue, there’s another rockin moment coming your way tomorrow! But first, I spotted this woman during our tour of Amer Fort with @coxandkingsusa. She was sweeping in the courtyard that lies in front of Ganesh Pol, perhaps the most famous gate inside the fort. When I saw her wander over to a series of repeating archways and columns that overlooks the city on the end of the courtyard to continue sweeping, when I saw the way her yellow sari seemed to glow like liquid gold in the sunlight, I knew that was my shot of the day. I had the help of our guide Yogesh who communicated with her so that she’d know I wanted her to pause in the light just long enough for me to take this photo. It’s not the same perhaps as taking a photo off the cuff, completely without the aid of any interaction with the subject. And I doubt I’d win any awards with this one. But now I forever have a record of the way she looked when she first stepped into the light and everything seemed to still while she became like a beacon brighter than the sun. If you pinch and zoom this photo you can see her face is as beautiful as her sari is bright. And since I couldn’t decide what crop I liked better, you can see both when you swipe right.
•
Construction of the fort was started by Raja Man Singh in 1592 and completed in the 18th century by Sawai Jai Singh. It is a mix of Hindu and Muslim styles, mostly made from red sandstone & marble. Technically it’s a palace and a fort from what I can tell via research. Sprawling over four levels, there’s a lot to see and it could take you all day if you’re so inclined. But my favorite part was Sheesh Mahal. The literal meaning of which is ‘mirrored’. It’s an open air hall that is covered from top to wall to ceiling with mirrored tiles that catch the light, sparkling like dew drops on grass in the morning! #coxandkingsusa #sponsoredtrip #sonyportraits #sonya7ii #incredibleindia #portraitsofindia #amerfortjaipur #amberfort

@ariwanders There is something about a sari. Dresses have an elegance and delicacy about them but a sari takes it to new levels. Have you ever tried one?

If you’ve seen my Stories of the last 24 hours, you already know this place. I’ve also saved them in my Profile so you can watch later. It’s the stunning jewel box of a hangout in Jaipur, known as @barpalladio. Created by Italian Barbara Miolini, it’s so well known now that it’s rare to see a list of must visits for the city that doesn’t include Bar Palladio (or its daytime sister nearby, Caffé Palladio). Usually I’m more about the unknown when I’m exploring a new place. BUT I’m also a sucker for good design having grown up the daughter of a painter, interior designer and architect. The interiors lived up to hype for me and though the cocktails did not, it didn’t faze me. In terms of interior inspiration, Bar Palladio provides that in spades. But what inspired Miolini to open these businesses and their accompanying home goods store? I turned to an article on @shoplatitude for answers in which Miolini says, “...born from a love of travel, from a desire to seek beauty.” She’d been living outside of Venice in Asolo before moving to India just over a decade ago and it was her memories of that area and her desire to have something of Italy with her in India that caused her to want to bring her past into her adopted home. She says, “Jaipur is a city whose creative identity has been tied to block print for hundreds of years. [...it] contains the touch of the hand, the weight of tradition [...]. These are two countries [Italy and India] that believe more is always better, that worship color and sensuality [...] where luxury is an actual way of living.” All that and more is clear when you walk in. And I love that Miolini’s designs echo not just her home and adopted country but others as well. Elements seem to be drawn from all over the globe and could be, as she says in the interview, “a Ramanov tearoom, an Ottoman tent.” The beauty is this bar is that it’s not a place you go just to drink. It’s a place you go to be inspired! #barpalladio #barpalladiojaipur

After 24 hours of flying — made very pleasant by @klm & @jetairways flying our group in Business Class from JFK — our #tajness group has made it to Mumbai. [Which was once called Bombay and is still referenced that way by some of my followers who have messaged me after seeing my Stories announcing our arrival...] However you refer to the city, it’s home to our first stop on a tour of India with @tajhotels: The Taj Mahal Palace. Built in 1903, which was 21 years before the nearby Gateway of India, it has welcomed maharajas and dignitaries for over a century. This grand dame watches over the causeway that hugs the Arabian Sea and is near to the city’s financial hub, parliament, stadium and shopping districts. In 2015 when I first visited India, I remember driving by and thinking what a stunning building this was from the outside. Now that I’m inside, I’m happy to report that it lives up to the hype and then some. Like a landmark from a bygone era, this hotel has all the grandeur and the elegance you’d expect. However, it’s in the kindness and generosity of the staff that I find the most comfort. And it’s that level of service, even more than the design, that to me earns this hotel its luxury status. 🇮🇳 #treasuredbytajtraveler #hostedtravel #sponsoredtrip #incredibleindia #hoteldesign #luxuryhotel #historichotel

It seems that in the days of algorithm woes, the worst thing you can do on Instagram is post whatever you like. I’m always reading tips about how it’s more important than ever to curate your grid and post the same kind of photos over and over, the ones that do the best. So don’t be creative, just recycle the same theme over and over and do it well each time. But I don’t feel like doing that most of the time because I prefer to be more creative. Especially when I travel. To let the place dictate the story and the moment show me what it wants captured. Case in point: the night @dante.vincent & I drove down to Huntington Beach to take a photo of the pier at sunset, this ended up being my favorite photo. The image I’d planned to take didn’t really turn out at all. But I love the way Danté looks under the pier, framed by all the #leadinglines in his badass @allsaints jacket that he bought in Scotland, which makes him look like an Italian American James Dean...I was swooning for the whole scene, sunset be damned. And that’s just how it goes sometimes. The things we don’t plan, turn out better than the ones we do. It’s certainly far less stressful than planning my grid Shot on my @sonyalpha #a7rii #leadinglinesphotography #underthepier #huntingtonbeachpier #visitcalifornia #alphacollective #republic_of_symmetry

Just landed in the City of Angels and I’m so excited for a weekend of no work, just bumming around with @dante.vincent. This week was bizarrely brutal work-wise so we haven’t planned much for the next two days other than just enjoying each other’s company. With one awesome exception and something that’s been on my California bucket list for as long as I can remember — Danté made a reservation at an Airstream in Venice with a HOT TUB SO. EXCITED. !!

I was pretty blown away by my suite at @loewsregency San Francisco during my trip to the city for Travel+Leisure. Not only was it huge, yet comfortable -- the nearly 180 degree view of the city was stunning day or night and yet somehow standing in the bathroom was where I appreciated that view the most. I found myself thinking about how much pain and suffering there is in the world, how little some people survive on, and here I was in a bathroom of all places, enjoying a view fit for a king or queen. I try to be thankful for everything I have so in the spirit of thanks I want to also give a shout out to the staff at this hotel. I had a grueling shooting schedule while I was in town and I didn't get much sleep but they really took care of me and in the end, for me, good service actually trumps even the best views in the world. When or where was the last time you had such a positive experience at a hotel? Let's tag some accounts and give some love back to the staff and employees who work so hard in the hospitality industry

At the end of one of the long pathways lined with olive trees and flowering plants (see @lamamouniamarrakech's feed for my photo of one such pathway), there lies a sublime little structure which houses a coffee / patisserie / ice cream shop. Traditional Moroccan file work and exquisite details make it a feast for the eyes and the comfortable seating that surrounds it in the shade of those olive trees makes for a wonderful place to sit and simply enjoy the garden after a long walk through the 8 hectares of plants, trees and cactus. This spot has become a favorite of mine and as much as I love leaving the property to explore the medina every day -- I also love it here so much I don't even want to leave. #LaMamouniaLife #lhwtraveler

My plan for today, Day 4 of my @Skyscanner Takeover, didn't work out. So I've retreated to my favorite place in Manhattan: the @METmuseum. No matter how many times I visit, I always find hidden gems I didn't know about, galleries I've never seen, statues or paintings I was unfamiliar with. Right now the Charles James exhibit is my newest favorite place to find inspiration (though the Impressionist paintings never fail as well) and I'm sad it won't be around much longer.
