Bumped by sharks, broken boards, savage storms and a route that had never been done. Let’s put it this way.. more people have stood on Everest than paddled the entire West Coast. Adventures are best to be shared. Twin brothers Casey and Ryan shared one of the craziest together prone paddling from Alaska to Mexico, and the next two days are your last chance to share in the film they made. This place is extremely hard to get into. With only 20 permits given a day using a lottery system and hundreds of people from all over the world trying to get in, the odds are against you. I tried for the next-day permit a few days ago and wasn’t successful. Over the years I’ve collectively spent months camping out for a permit, it’s tough but the reward is worth the effort!
In other wave news, I’m super excited to be heading to Kelly Slater’s Surf Ranch (@kswaveco) tomorrow to surf the best man-made wave in the world with @outerknown. As a kid, I grew up with a giant poster of @kellyslater over my bed so this will definitely be a dream come true! ...I’m also super nervous about falling and blowing it on the wave haha. 🤞

Deep breath, a few seconds of swimming blindly through a whiteout of bubbles, and then this :) under the waves, a million light beams coming through underwater clouds and a turtle that decided it wanted to swim right through Cobian’s legs. Always worth the extra effort to see below the surface.

Thank you to everyone who has supported @savethereef documentary!! One of the craziest take away for me was that one drop of oxybenzone in six Olympic size swimming pools still showed harm to corals. I keep getting asked about reef safe sunscreen and I know it’s a bit confusing. Mostly look for non-nano zinc as the primary ingredient and I tagged some of my favorites. I also included a story highlight called earth about different causes and information I’ve storied lately.

A short series about fireflies in Japan. Watching fireflies is a very exciting thing. You arrive long before the night  to find spot, composition, talk to local photographers to understand best conditions (peak of fireflies may be just few days at certain locations). Then bring your chair and wait. Wait for miracle, and when the first firefly goes up - you are happy like a kid =)
Fireflies are very sensitive. They need clean water nearby, warm humid air (but not rain), and no lights. To photograph them you need to make a stack of hundreds images, because on exposures more than 1 minute you'll get lots of hot pixels. But not a single photo can show how beautiful it is - shimmering and blinking forest full of little stars.
Many thanks to my friend @kenji_yamamura_photography to bring me to such beautiful places!

@felixinden Epic stuff Daniel. So good

This experience they call Fatherhood has been the greatest gift I could have ever been given. I still remember being 25 years old.. coming home from my first trip to Japan where I shot a cover story for Surfer magazine and I was buzzing with excitement. I came home to my wife @brea_face who announced by holding up a onesie .. that we were pregnant. I don’t even remember the words that came out of my mouth but I’m sure they were some type of supportive mumble. But the truth was I was scared sh*tless, trembling and more afraid then I’ve ever been. I’ve dealt with my fair share of insecurity as a young dad raising two boys.. the added pressure of not growing up with my Father made me question myself In many ways. I would say that for me personally there has been nothing that has provided more growth more healing and pride than raising these two with my amazing wife @brea_face .

Visiting the enormous royal penguin colonies on Macquarie Island with @heritageexpeditions was a real highlight of my trip to the Subantarctic feisty, fluffy, and terribly cute, observing penguin colonies on a grand scale is kinda like people watching in a big city. Except these guys steal each other’s rocks and poo everywhere with wild abandon. Love and death, birth and hardship, nature is beautiful but cruel, and it’s never so evident when you observe it firsthand in a place like this. @angieaway That’s unreal!

@followmeaway YAY YOU SAW IT! So cool

The Causeway Coast in Northern Ireland includes the Giant’s Causeway, Dunluce Castle, the Dark Hedges and the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge. We did them all in one day on our hosted tour with @StellerStories. And we also went up in the air to see the coast by helicopter.
.
I don’t recommend packing all this into one day but I do think you should see all of the above! I hope that Northern Ireland will be able to balance the effects of tourism with the need for the earth to be protected because it would be such a shame for this area not to be preserved for future generations.
.
The bridge links the mainland to the tiny island of Carrickarede and it’s been thought to exist in some form or another for 350 years or more. Salmon fisherman once used it to go out further and get closer to the salmon during the season that ran from June to September but by 2002 there were not enough salmon to sustain a fishing industry and the area came under the protection of the National Trust. You can cross the bridge for a fee but I found the real draw was just the area as a whole; the geology of which is stunning, with water so blue it looked like the Caribbean through my polarized sunglasses.
.
Not far away, much of the Giant’s Causeway is also managed by the National Trust. It mirrors the basalt columns at Fingal’s Cave on the isle of Staffa which are said to be the other half of a bridge built by Irish giant Fionn mac Cumhaill so he could fight Scottish giant Benandonner. There’s a lot of variety in the middle of the story from what I’ve read but it almost always ends with Benandonner fleeing back to Scotland and destroying the Causeway as he went.
.
It was easy to see why this area is so popular and why Game of Thrones filmed at the Coast. The natural beauty vividly called to mind for me the mythical stories and fairy tale books that I buried my nose in as a kid!

@olloclip Amazing Chris!

One of the questions I get asked the most is, how did you work full time and travel the world? And I have two answers: time management and easy access to opportunities. I’ve been doing photography for 4 years, and for 3 of those years, I had a full time job at Amazon. I was lucky enough to get that job through LinkedIn! While I have had many opportunities come through Instagram, most of my professional contacts and opportunities have come from LinkedIn. I love that I can access it anywhere and network with someone where I am to find people who share similar interests. For example, when I was on Maui, I used LinkedIn’s “near me” feature to connect with local brands in the area to collaborate. LinkedIn has 20 million jobs available, but most importantly, it has the community to help you find the right one. More info can be found at LinkedIn.com/jobs. #inittogether #sponsored

Well Instagram, you know I always save my favorites and ... this is actually my favorite shot that I took in Zimbabwe. I know that I have pretty unusual tastes with my photography but often you guys surprise me and agree on my random choices. Haha. So, what do I love about this? Well, I took it in the elephant hide in Hwange National Park and that hide is super challenging! There’s a lot happening and you’re so close and the elephants are all over the place and it’s hard to keep your cool! I had two stints in the hide, the first one was 2 hours and the second was 3 hours. I was down my favorite lens, my 40-150 f2.8, and I was struggling to get anything I loved or anything I thought was unique. It was the middle of the day both times and the light was bright and uninteresting. I took this photo 2 1/2 hours into my second stint in the hide, and here are the things that turned around for me ... 1) I was finally able to keep my shit together enough to think about my compositions 2) One of my tour guests, @jubileescarlett , lent me his 40-150 3) I had started to use the foreground grass, the top of the hide and anything I could think of to create blur and interest and, 4) I timed it all perfectly with the action, the bokeh and the water. It might have taken me 2,000 shots and 4 1/2 hours but I nailed it. I hope you like it too?@TourismZimbabweOfficial #AWorldOfWonders #VisitZimbabwe .

@roam Those views 🤤

Here in Hawaii most of our beaches look pretty “clean”, but once you learn how to look and where to look the inundation of plastic become hard to un-see. Twenty five of us spent the morning sifting sand for microplastics and collecting pounds and pounds of marine debris with @sustainablecoastlineshawaii and @savethereef that have floated onto our shores from around the world.

Some facts I’m always stunned by:

1. Plastic doesn’t EVER go away it just breaks down into smaller pieces. And whether it’s single use plastics, discarded commercial fishing gear, or daily use items, inevitably, as long as these things are being used they are also ending up in the ocean - 8 million pieces daily.

2. Less than 9% of the world’s plastics are recycled so this is not a sustainable answer.

3. As plastics break down they often give off the same pheromones as food. You can actually see the bite marks on so many of the pieces as fish and other marine life unknowingly nibble on this noxious oil and chemical blend.

Easy ways to help: COMMIT to using a reusable water bottle. Avoid single use plastics and notice when your favorite businesses use them - talk to them about it Bamboo toothbrush. Buy in bulk vs prepackaged. Know your fisherman and eat local fish vs that produced by the large scale commercial fishing industry. Do a plastic audit of your own life. Do it with your friends, make it fun! This is truly a global issue with every person, place and industry contributing- meaning every single person also has the awesome power to help.

Whew k that was long and about 2% of all I learned and could say I’m about to go diving now to remember the ‘why’ behind all these words. I’m better motivated by love than by sadness #protectwhereweplay #savethereef #sustainablecoastlineshawaii
